SECANT PILE WALL

A secant pile wall is a concrete wall where the piles intersect, resulting in a closed wall. When the piles just touch each other or have only a small gap, it is called a tangent pile wall.

  • First, a guide beam is placed to direct the drill at the start of the drilling, so that the concrete piles can intersect. Then, the piles are drilled deep enough below the excavation level of the construction pit (basement) to ensure a solid anchoring in the ground. While the concrete is still fresh, a steel reinforcement mesh is placed for extra rigidity. If necessary, ground anchors are added to achieve large earth retainers or to support heavy loads from adjacent buildings.

  • The concrete secant pile is manufactured using the cased auger pile technique. This involves using a continuous screw (auger) to drill the soil upwards within a steel casing. After the soil has been completely removed from the steel casing, the casing is gradually filled with concrete. The casing is then pulled up through the hollow shaft of the auger drill.

EXECUTABLE NEXT TO EXISTING BUILDINGS

In English, this technique is called FOW = Front Of Wall, because secant pile walls can be constructed right against existing buildings. The drilling table has no protruding parts, allowing the concrete pile to be safely constructed 15 cm from the building.

EXECUTABLE NEXT TO EXISTING FOUNDATIONS

Because only the soil within the steel casing is drilled out, the adjacent soil experiences no change in stress, making this technique ‘ground-neutral’. Additionally, this drilling technique is vibration-free and therefore suitable for execution along existing foundations.

ENSURE LOAD-BEARING FUNCTION

If the stability concept of the building requires that load be transferred to the secant pile wall, this can be taken into account in the design of the secant pile wall. The load can be transferred via the concrete secant piles to a load-bearing layer in the subsoil.

WITHOUT PRIOR GROUNDWATER LOWERING

Secant pile walls can be constructed through groundwater and, depending on the study and the subsoil, serve as a watertight basin in which dewatering (drainage) can be installed.
